FAQ: frequently asked questions

On this page, we answered some common questions about Mikoto Studio. If you have questions that are not answered, you can post them in our Discord server. You can get access via the link below.

What is Mikoto Studio?

Mikoto Studio is a new singing synthesizer, developed by the Dutch company ExpressiveLabs. We believe that the current offering of singing synthesizers is lacking in accessibility and ease-of-use, so we built our software around those values. Besides that, we also packed in countless features and creature comforts to make working with our product as intuitive and friendly as possible.

Can I use my own voicebanks with Mikoto Studio?

Absolutely! We designed our software from the ground up to make creating and working with your own voice libraries as easy as possible. Mikoto's intelligent CHIRP engine is fully compatible with all1 UTAU voicebanks. With the help of renowned developers from the community, such as PaintedCz and UtaUtaUtau, we built an extensive system to handle most reclists. And when that fails, you can create your own definitions and dictionaries too.
Please do note that Mikoto Studio only allows the use of UTAU voice libraries. User-made AI voicebanks, such as NNSVS or DiffSinger, are not supported. To learn why, read our ethics statement.

Is Mikoto Studio an UTAU frontend? Does it support UTAU resamplers?

Mikoto Studio is a fully integrated singing synthesizer. Its UTAU compatibility was developed from the ground up and does not rely on external tools such as phonemizers or resamplers. We developed innovative systems to provide a universal experience regardless of a voicebank's reclist, language, or oto style. However, we do understand that UTAU users are keen on tinkering, which is why Mikoto also offers users the ability to use legacy UTAU-style input methods.

Why would I use Mikoto Studio instead of UTAU?

You don't have to! Mikoto was created to offer an entry-level synth for new creators, while addressing some of the grievances that existing users have. It's not a drop-in replacement for UTAU, but rather a new experience that can coexist with other vocal synths and music making tools. As a company, we believe it's our mission to strengthen the existing community through intuitive tools and user-friendly standardization. This is why we give back to the community by developing new open-source projects.

What languages does Mikoto Studio support?

We are currently developing support for 6 different languages. We aim to support all six on both of our engines at launch, giving you immediate access to Mikoto's easy-to-use multilingual capabilities. The languages we are currently working on are English, Spanish, Japanese, Bahasa Indonesia, and two surprise languages that will be announced at a later date.

What operating systems will Mikoto Studio run on?

Mikoto Studio is currently being developed with native support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. We aim to make all features available on all platforms, including full support for legacy-encoded UTAU voicebanks.

Will Mikoto Studio be a subscription service?

While the final sales model hasn't been announced yet, we can say that Mikoto Studio will not be a subscription service. Instead, users purchase a perpetual license for a major version of the software. Upgrades will be offered at a discounted price to those who already purchased an earlier version.

Can I become a voice provider for a commercial MiSinger?

We currently operate our talent acquisition program on a scouting-only basis. Please refer to this page on our company website for details.
